Award-Winning Greek Film Maker Aids Effort For Human Rights Education

The Church of Scientology of New York hosted Greek film maker and news correspondent, Athina Krikeli, the featured speaker at a Youth for Human Rights forum. Ms. Krikela addressed a group of youth and adults and spoke of the courage required for human rights reporting, where the safety of one’s subjects is even more important than what one is reporting.

Ms. Krikeli presented her award winning documentary, “The Enclaved,” about Greek Cypriot victims of the 31 years of Turkish occupation in Northern Cyprus.

The event also featured a showing of a human rights music video, UNITED, created by 19-year-old member of Youth for Human Rights International, Taron Lexton.

The forum was part of an international campaign aimed at educating youth about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Speaking were human rights advocates from Russia, Trinidad, U.S. and Hong Kong.

“It is vital that people respect one another’s rights,” said Ms. Hannah Mets, a young actress who is the president of the group’s New York branch, speaking at the conference. “Knowing your rights and respecting the rights of others are the real keys to peace.”

Scientology churches throughout Europe have started Youth for Human Rights groups, where young people plan and execute projects to bring about awareness of basic human rights.

The purpose of Youth for Human Rights is:

“To teach youth around the globe about Human Rights, thus helping them to become valuable advocates for the promotion of tolerance and peace.”
