Bringing Solutions to Illiteracy and Poverty: The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour Opens in the Philippines

On July 2nd, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Asian Goodwill Tour made their arrival in Manila officially known at a press conference attended by multi-platinum selling singer, David Pomeranz. During the press conference at the University of the Philippines Diliman, the Volunteer Ministers announced their plan to help Philippine citizens by providing them tools they can use to improve their lives.

While news of recent murders and kidnappings spread across the daily headlines, the Goodwill Tour brings solutions to various problems and stresses in life, including illiteracy, drug addiction, work stress and familial problems.

"The world needs help. So do individuals. And that’s why I'm very happy to be able to present this tour today, because I know that Volunteer Ministers can help the people of this great country," said Pomeranz, a long-time supporter of the program.

A new release of a series of 19 booklets based on the Scientology Handbook was also announced at the conference. These are works of American humanitarian and Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, and they contain tools to improve life.

The press conference was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, featuring a rousing performance by Pomeranz. Also attending were officials from the President’s Dangerous Drug Board, Citizens Crime Watch of the Philippines National Police and Dean Jorge V. Sibal from the University.

Manila is one of 71 major cities that the Goodwill Tour is visiting. With their distinctive yellow shirts and uplifting motto "Something Can Be Done About It," Volunteer Ministers set up traveling exhibitions around the world, ministering practical help to communities and individuals.

For over 30 years, the Scientology Volunteer Minister Corps, which counts more than 100,000 members among its global ranks, has provided assistance at major disaster sites, including the World Trade Center terrorist attack and the Indian Ocean tsunami. The Volunteer Ministers administered help with everything from soothing emotional pain to rebuilding devastated cities. Most recently the Volunteer Ministers helped over 2,600 people after Durian , the disastrous Typhoon in Bicol, Albay.

The spirit of these volunteers was described by Mr. Hubbard when he wrote, "A Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others."

The exhibition will be on the University of the Philippines Diliman campus until July 15th (9:00am-5:30pm) and is open to anyone.
